Ruins of Pompeii –   The Vesuvius victims in question were former residents of Herculaneum, a town even closer to the maw of the volcano than the famous site of Pompeii. When Vesuvius blew its top, it lobbed pumice.

Frozen In Time: The Victims Of The Catastrophic Mount. The volcano had been dormant for centuries, but that changed when Mount Vesuvius quite literally blew its top and submerged the city of Pompeii and the neighboring cities of Herculaneum, Oplonti, and Stabiae in hot ash and pumice, killing thousands of people.

Mount Vesuvius is a somma-stratovolcano located on the Gulf of Naples in Campania, Italy, about 9 km east of Naples and a short distance from the shore. It is one of several volcanoes which form the Campanian volcanic arc.
