St. Louis Cemetery # 1 – oldest cemetery – 425 Basin St., New Orleans, LA 70112
Due to rampant vandalism of historical tombs, the local diocese has mandated this rule it is closed to the public. You can only go in with a tour guide eyeballing your every move. Highly recommend bringing an umbrella, sunscreen, & water as there is virtually no shade. Some movies have been made here: parts of “Easy Rider.” The diocese has stopped movie making due to the “partying” that went on with the movie making.
Some of our favorite sites were Nicolas Cage‘s future site as well as the possible grave site of Voodoo Queen Marie Laveau. She is buried in the Paris family tomb. Marie Laveau, who as tour guides will tell you if you didn’t know, was a voodoo queen (good magic), not a hoodoo (evil) practitioner. She was a Creole and free person of color who used her “powers” to give people advice or help them.
