GIFTED – Frank Adler (Chris Evans) is a single man raising a child prodigy – his spirited young niece Mary (Mckenna Grace) – in a coastal town in Florida. Frank’s plans for a normal school life for Mary are foiled when the seven-year-old’s mathematical abilities come to the attention of Frank’s formidable mother Evelyn (Lindsay Duncan) whose plans for her granddaughter threaten to separate Frank and Mary. Octavia Spencer plays Roberta, Frank and Mary’s landlady and best friend. Jenny Slate is Mary’s teacher, Bonnie, a young woman whose concern for her student develops into a connection with her uncle as well.
Q-tips say: Yes, see it. Mrs. Q says: sometimes there is more to life for a “Gifted” child than getting into the best schools, and excelling, etc. Frank, the girl’s uncle, sends Mary to a public school to gain some social skills. The grandmother finds out about Mary and plots to take over her custody and life. I found this movie interesting because the “grandmother” (meddling? or is she actually really wanted only the best for the kid). Did “grandma” have another reason for wanting to take over the life of the “grand child” to have the name on a plaque on the wall?
We enjoyed it. It is sometimes nice to see a “good feel movie” sometimes:)
