BAD JEWS – Northlight Theater in Skokie. 9501 Skokie Blvd., Skokie, IL 60077, (847) 673-6300
BAD JEWS: Nothing brings out the worst in a family like a funeral. Daphna is the most devout Jew in the Feygenbaum family. (Just ask her.) Her cousin Liam is the most deserving first-born. (Just ask him.) Don’t ask Liam’s brother Jonah anything. In this funny comedy, long standing (and not-so-buried) antipathies boil up in a battle between two cousins over a treasured family heirloom. Stir in the identity crisis and you get one of the wisest, most excruciating plays you’ll see this year.
Q-Tips say: Went to a matinee and believe there were probably only 2 other people besides us who were not Jewish – but we expected that. Bad Jews was advertised as “savagely funny comedy.” We thought there were some humorous parts but definitely NOT a comedy. Found it to be an average play with the usual family issues that arise after someone passes on. There is always at least one person who feel that are “more special” than the others (just ask her). We say pass on “Bad Jews” unless you are Jewish.
