The Year Between

Inspired by true events, THE YEAR BETWEEN is the story of Clemence Miller, a college sophomore who is forced to move back home after having a mental breakdown. Faced with a surprising diagnosis of bipolar disorder and a jarring return to the Illinois suburbs, Clemence has to learn how to live with her well-meaning but frustrated family and find balance in a world that seems hellbent on thwarting her.

Parents: Intense drama about mental illness has language, sex, drugs. Not for little ones but for adults & teens around 15 + is ok.

Q tips say: Thought it might be a good movie about a young college lady suffers from bipolar disorder. It’s hard to describe bi-polar disorder, but this movie manages to make it a story. By giving us a solid take on the what living with ADHD in its ugliest forms is like, both for the sufferer and those who suffer with her this movie can’t help but be a public service.

Mrs. Q says: The Year Between is a great watch for families who want to learn more about living with mental illness. It could be mildly triggering for some, especially if they have bipolar disorder, but on the whole, the film offers a lived-in look of this disorder.

The year of the Dog

Matt, a loner alcoholic at rock bottom, struggles to maintain sobriety for 30 days so he can honor his mother’s dying wish, to visit her in hospice, sober. His book-thumping AA sponsor, Fred, offers him refuge at his farm, where Matt finds Yup’ik, a stray Husky with a unique talent. The man and dog relationship is precarious at first, but with the help of a close-knit Montana community, the two strays find a connection and discover what it takes to pull through to the finish line.

Q-tips say: Yes, we did enjoy this movie. This is a heartfelt movie that deals with the sensitive subject of alcohol addiction. The acting and sweeping Montana landscapes are great. Also love that it explores a sport so many people have probably never heard of.

Mrs. Q says: Story. Scenery. An absolutely adorable husky — he’s probably my favorite part.  So much heart and smarts about life.

The Champions

Woody Harrelson stars in the hilarious and heartwarming story of a former minor-league basketball coach who, after a series of missteps, is ordered by the court to manage a team of players with intellectual disabilities. He soon realizes that despite his doubts, together, this team can go further than they ever imagined.

Q-tips say: Yes, see it! Wholesome and commendable. These fresh screen faces ooze charisma and have wonderful comic timing.

Some critics are saying the film is patronizing and making a mockery of the disabled community, but that’s not the case.

Mrs. Q says: I have learned one thing from some critics – never pay attention to the critics. This is a good movie. The cast brings out the best in each other and all are true champions.

The Diplomat

Amid an international crisis, a career diplomat juggles her new high-profile job as ambassador to the United Kingdom and her turbulent marriage to a political star.

Q-tips say: This is a series. Mrs. Q really does not series – because now we have to wait for the group of series comes on.

So far, we did enjoy it somewhat.

The Son

A cautionary tale that follows a family as it struggles to reunite after falling apart. THE SON centers on Peter (Hugh Jackman), whose hectic life with his infant and new partner Beth (Vanessa Kirby) is upended when his ex-wife Kate (Laura Dern) appears at his door to discuss their son Nicholas (Zen McGrath), who is now a teenager. The young man has been missing school for months and is deeply troubled. Peter strives to take care of Nicholas as he would have wanted his own father (Anthony Hopkins) to have taken care of him while juggling his and Beth’s new son, and at work an offer of a dream position in Washington. However, by reaching for the past to correct its mistakes, he loses sight of how to hold onto Nicholas in the present.

Mrs. Q says: Warning – A very depressing movie. We did not enjoy it!

Hold the Line

Page 1

by Michael Fanone & John Shiffman

Hold the Line: The Insurrection and One Cop’s Battle for America’s Soul.

Mrs. Q says: Yes, I did like this book.

Fanone is divorced and has four daughters. While he remained estranged from his ex-wife until the January 6th attack, after the attack he described her as “a pretty integral part of [his] support system”. He lives in Virginia with his mother.

It’s well written, yes, but the author doesn’t mince words or play politics. He tells it the way he sees it and bravely shows authenticity. Be forewarned the language is rough. Fanone became the unwitting face of the beleaguered police at the Capitol on January 6th. He was simply doing his job when he was pulled by duty to defend the Capitol against a mob that subsequently pulled him into the mob, beat him with fists, clubs, flagpoles, etc., tased him three times, attempted to take his gun, while screaming, “Kill him with his own gun!” He returned to the tunnel semi conscious and slipped into unconsciousness for approximately 4 minutes. I encourage everyone to watch his body camera footage. He is every officer defending the Capitol that day.

Fanone is, for the most part, apolitical. Although not explicitly stated, I am under the impression that he subscribes to Republican ideals. That said, he is equally critical of far left and far right politics and strongly advocates to depoliticize police, provide more comprehensive training, and quit using the police to run political scrum. See a problem? Provide a solution and involve all parties to address it. Then fund it.

Fanone provides a comprehensive background on himself and does not hide his character flaws. He owns his mistakes and provides how they shaped him and taught him. He was a Capitol Police officer for a short time and street cop for most of his career. He understands the unintended biases and worked with the attitude of increasing public safety, taking the real criminals off the streets. His goal was not to be punitive or meet quotas. He served the people in his assigned area.

The last part focuses on some real world ideas to bring about police reform. As he sees the people he served, he doesn’t believe in punitive actions except in the case of truly bad actors (he singles out Chauvin), but pushes the ideas of training in all aspects of law enforcement, including the cultural aspect.

80 for Brady

80 FOR BRADY is inspired by the true story of four best friends living life to the fullest when they take a wild trip to the 2017 Super Bowl LI to see their hero Tom Brady play. On Paramount +, Prime Video, Vudu.

4/11/23 – Q-tips say: Yes, see it! There are some silly, goofy scenes but definitely worth watching. Yes, it is based on a true story.

Mrs. Q says: Who said that being 80 is not exciting? 80 for Brady movie shows it can be. It’s tame, with a distinct 80s screwball comedy feel. A comfort movie for the silver-haired crowd, 80 for Brady is charming.  These four grand dames of cinema keep it entertaining. 80 for Brady‘s stars are so talented that they’re more than enough to carry the movie’s story — even if you aren’t a Tom Brady fan.

Juniper

Juniper photo 1

Ruth (Oscar nominee Charlotte Rampling) is a worldly former war correspondent now bored in retirement with a drinking problem and a newly fractured leg. Sam (George Ferrier) is her unruly grandson, recently kicked out of boarding school and grieving the death of his mother. When the two are brought together under the same roof, they form an unexpected bond.

Q- tips say: Yes, we did enjoy this movie.

Mrs. Q says: The evolution of a relationship between a seventeen year old boy and his grandmother is emotionally fulfilling. The film… maintains some of its prickly charm, in no small part because of the feisty Ruth, whose ice-queen persona here straddles bone-dry humor and withering tragedy.

Johnny

Johnny photo 1

After a court order sends him to work at a hospice, an ex-criminal strikes up a friendship with a compassionate priest who changes his life.

A Polish Documentary. Yes, sub titles & they speak English.

Q-tips say: Yes we did enjoy it. Q’s are Polish & were raised in a Catholic environment with priests & Nuns for education & religious experiences. Might be a tad slow for some at the beginning but worth while watching.

Mrs. Q says: A simple but impactful enjoyable movie. It doesn’t try too hard to add drama or intrigue to its tale, just allowing the goodness of two people to speak for themselves as they endure hardship and work through one of life’s most harrowing responsibilities.
