Benji

7/13/22 – A dog comes to the rescue and helps heal a broken family when a boy and his sister stumble into serious danger.

Q-tips say: Yes, see it! Updated dog tale has realistic peril and a little violence. A bit dark, for parents who like to spare their kids tears. But listening to to news now a days can be a tad worse than the little darkness in this movie.

Yes the pre-teens & teens & adults might like this movie.

Looking for the most benign family-friendly entertainment, the nostalgic and corny “Benji” will do the trick.

Mrs. Q says: Too bad there’s no Oscar for Best Animal Performance of the Year. Benji would win hands — er paws — down.

Dear Jack – Dear Louise

Review: Ken Ludwig's DEAR JACK, DEAR LOUISE at George Street Playhouse Charms

Northlight Theater in Skokie, IL – 9501 Skokie Boulevard, Skokie, IL 60077, (847) 673-6300

7/13/22 –  Set in the early 1940’s during WWII, Jack Ludwig, a medical doctor, is stationed in Oregon when he starts corresponding with Louise Rabiner, a dancer and aspiring actress who lives in New York City. Originally from Coatesville, Pennsylvania, Jack has a shy nature while Louise is spirited and outgoing. As they exchange letters that tell of trials, successes, and innermost feelings, their bond continues to grow. The two plan to meet and have a date in New York for dinner and a show as soon as Jack gets his leave. But as Louise continues to audition for roles and the war rages on, their plans are thrown into disarray. While you listen to Jack and Louise read aloud their thoughtful correspondences, you will hope for the success of the young couple’s relationship.

Q-tips say: Yes, see it! Dear Jack, Dear Louise. This is a love story that will please audiences of all ages. Take your pre-teens & teens, they might learn a lot about our history & our society during this time – w/o computers, cell phones, etc. However, you might end up answering many of their questions.

Holiday Calendar

7/7/22 – A photographer inherits an antique Advent calendar that seems to predict her future — including a budding romance.

Q-tips say: was good. After a few busy days, it was an relaxing movie. Should have been name The Holiday Advent Calendar. Probably more fun to watch around Sept./Nov. closer to the Holidays. Mrs. Q says: A good holiday rom-com, but the film is still cheerily nonsensical. A warm holiday romance is cute but predictable. This movie is like a sugar cookie: you know exactly what you’re getting, and it has all the right ingredients (love, magic, presents).

Goodman Theater Chgo 7/7/22

  LIFE AFTER –  Goodman Theater, Chgo. 170 N Dearborn St., (312) 443-3800,  goodmantheatre.org

Yes, everyone needs to wear a mask – audience/workers, etc. except for the performers! No, you do not have to show your vaccination card.

Review: LIFE AFTER at Goodman Theatre

LIFE AFTER –  Goodman Theatre’s ensemble brings the story of 16-year-old Alice, who mourns the sudden loss of her father, to life in a visceral and touching production. Alice’s head as she contemplates her life in the wake of this tragedy. Johnson’s songs for the Furies and the other characters also magnificently capture the many layers to grief and its intertwining with anxiety. I am extremely fortunate to not yet have suffered a loss as great as the one Alice experiences in the show, but I found the portrayal of her anxiety and her circling of “What if?” questions highly, highly relatable. The number “Control What You Can” represents this energy so precisely, as Alice grapples with her anxiety over whether she’s to blame for her father’s death after he’s in an accident the night after they have an argument. By contrast, Alice’s father himself was a motivational speaker who specifically encouraged people to control what they can and let go of what they cannot. It’s a really beautiful layer that Johnson builds into the piece: Alice’s father Frank spent his career trying to provide Alice and others with the very tools to survive what she’s now experiencing.

It is great to be back in Chicago to enjoy plays at the theaters, due to Covid-19 it been almost two years.   Liking every moment of the experience at the different theaters.

Q-tips say: We enjoyed the play Life After.   Mrs. Q says: Think about the  “What if’s” but don’t to remember the bottom of the line, “Always remember the good times.”

Petterino’s

Q-tips say: It has been awhile but glad we are back in Chicago to enjoy Petterino’s. New Owners but still good food/drinks/and outstanding service. Petterino’s is located just steps away from Michigan Avenue in the heart of Chicago’s Loop and Theatre District. Petterino’s has been a beloved downtown restaurant. Yes, new owner & now is NOT a Lettuce Entertainment Restaurant anymore. Indoor/Outdoor dining.

Went for dinner after the Goodman Theater next door.

Began with our usual libations.

I decided on the Prime Berger w/ fries.

The other half had: Spaghetti with Prime Beef Meatballs – 2 meatballs and marinara.

We enjoyed our meals, ambiance & drinks.

The Bad Guys

7/3/22 –

A crackerjack criminal crew of animal outlaws are about to attempt their most challenging con yet–becoming model citizens. Never have there been five friends as infamous as The Bad Guys–dashing pickpocket Mr. Wolf , seen-it-all safecracker Mr. Snake, chill master-of-disguise Mr. Shark, “muscle” Mr. Piranha and sharp-tongued expert hacker Ms. Tarantula But when, after years of countless heists and being the world’s most-wanted villains, the gang is finally caught, Mr. Wolf brokers a deal (that he has no intention of keeping) to save them all from prison: The Bad Guys will go good. Under the tutelage of their mentor Professor Marmalade, an arrogant (but adorable!) guinea pig, The Bad Guys set out to fool the world that they’ve been transformed. Along the way, though, Mr. Wolf begins to suspect that doing good for real may give him what he’s always secretly longed for: acceptance. So when a new villain threatens the city, can Mr. Wolf persuade the rest of the gang to become… The Good Guys?

Q-tips say: Yes, we did like it. Animated, silly, & yes, a movie for the entire family could watch. Mrs. Q says: Probably not for the real little ones but teens & old folks, like us. A mindless silly movie to watch to escape the politics/violence, etc. we read/see in today’s world. So see it, relax & have a laugh.

Q-tips say: Was good.

Mr. Q liked it more than Mrs. Q.

Stranger Things

Mrs. Q found it strange, slow & sometimes hard to keep up with what is going on.

The Mist –

6/22 – Stephen King’s 1980 novella “The Mist” — adapted into a feature film by Frank Darabont in 2007 — is re-imagined this time for TV by executive producer/writer Christian Torpe. Set in the small town of Bridgeville, Maine, the story centers on a family torn apart by a heinous crime. In the aftermath, they are suddenly cut off from the rest of the world when an eerie, foreboding vapor unleashes predatory creatures onto the streets. Family, friends, and adversaries become strange bedfellows, battling the mysterious mist and its threats, as the rules of society break down.

Q-tips say: A foreboding mist arrives in a small town, ushering in a terrifying new reality for its residents and putting their humanity to the test. If you are a Steven King fan, you might enjoy it. However, The Q’s were disappointed in the ending. Certainly, not a feel good movie.

The Bear

Carmy, a young fine-dining chef, comes home to Chicago to run his family sandwich shop. As he fights to transform the shop and himself, he works alongside a rough-around-the-edges crew that ultimately reveal themselves as his chosen family.

Q-tips say: See it! We enjoyed it.

Christmas Inheritance

7/2022 – Before ambitious heiress Ellen Langford can inherit her father’s business, she must deliver a special Christmas card to her dad’s former partner in Snow Falls. When a snowstorm strands her at the town inn, she discovers the true gift of Christmas.

Q-tips say: Yes, see it.  We thought this was the perfect sappy, hallmark type Christmas movie about getting back to your roots, and valuing people and community. I’m not sure why some reviews were so terrible? It’s not gonna win any awards but we liked it.
