Promising young woman

3/23 – Nothing in Cassie’s life is what it appears to be — she’s wickedly smart, tantalizingly cunning, and she’s living a secret double life by night. Now, an unexpected encounter is about to give Cassie a chance to right the wrongs from the past.

Q-tips say: Not sure we were going to like this movie but with the twist/turns turned out to be ok. Feels intentional from start to finish, every line balanced for effect and many-layered meanings. Manipulative and nihilistic, it forces a ruthlessly honest performance. Its provocative, booby-trapped plot that comes riddled with “gotcha” moments.

Ice cream in the cupboard

After being physically attacked by his loving wife, a man is forced to face the fact that she has early-onset Alzheimer’s disease.

Q-tips say: YES, SEE IT! A touching and earnest story about a a difficult subject. Mrs. Q says: The amazing way the story depicts what could happen to any family.

By the way, no, she is not a senior citizen.

This is not the first film on this subject, “Still Alice & “Iris” are two good movies that are more or less on the same subject and are good films to watch if time permits.

Operation Varsity Blues: The College Admission Scandal

Reenactments tell the story of the mastermind behind a scam to get children from wealthy families into the top American universities.

Q-tips say: see it. Most of us read about this in the news. The most surprising aspect of this movie is the ending.
Mrs. Q thinks: The rules of normal behavior do not apply to the wealthy and powerful … until, of course, they do. You don’t need a Harvard degree to know that’s a priceless lesson to learn.

Woody vs Farrow

Woody Allen v. Mia Farrow is an American documentary television miniseries. 3/21

A four-part series documenting the accusation of sexual abuse against Woody Allen involving Dylan, his then 7-year-old daughter with Mia Farrow; their subsequent custody trial, the revelation of Allen’s relationship with Farrow’s daughter, Soon-Yi; and the controversial aftermath in the years that followed.

The series examines the sexual assault allegation made against Woody Allen by his adopted daughter Dylan Farrow, who was seven when the abuse allegedly occurred. It follows the custody battle between Allen and his former partner Mia Farrow, his marriage to her adopted daughter Soon-Yi Previn, who was 35 years younger than Allen, and the events of subsequent years.[9]

Q-tips say: We did like it. Mrs. Q says: Does money & power talk? Oh, YES.

The last episode #4 was a tad long and slow. The finale of the HBO docuseries delves into the changing perception of Woody Allen and Ms. Farrow’s decision to go public with her allegations of sexual abuse.

Witches 3/21

In late 1967, a young orphaned boy goes to live with his loving grandma in the rural Alabama town of Demopolis. As the boy and his grandmother encounter some deceptively glamorous but thoroughly diabolical witches, she wisely whisks him away to a seaside resort. Regrettably, they arrive at precisely the same time that the world’s Grand High Witch has gathered her fellow cronies from around the globe — under cover — to carry out her nefarious plans.

Q-tips say: The Q tips somewhat liked it. Mrs. Q says: NOT for children. The very best was the little mouse in the boy’s pocket and the ending.

Supernova 3/21

Sam (Academy Award winner Colin Firth) and Tusker (Academy Award nominee Stanley Tucci), partners of twenty years, are traveling across England in their old camper van visiting friends, family and places from their past. Following a life-changing diagnosis, their time together has become more important than ever until secret plans test their love like never before.

Q-tips say: YES, see this movie. Scene after scene, as the two men visit friends and family one last time, we glimpse the showier, more maudlin film that Supernova could but never does devolve into, hovering just at the edges.  Two powerhouse performances in this moving drama that explores its delicate subject with such intimacy and restrain.

This movie is about Alzheimer’s Disease. A progressive disease that destroys memory and other important mental functions. Brain cell connections and the cells themselves degenerate and die, eventually destroying memory and other important mental functions.

Q-tips say: This movie was to be a comedy – but OMG the movie was just stupid. Would you expect anything more from a film featuring a farting lion?

Alzheimer’s is a progressive disease, where dementia symptoms gradually worsen over a number of years. In its early stages, memory loss is mild, but with late-stage Alzheimer’s, individuals lose the ability to carry on a conversation and respond to their environment.

It is a sin – 3/2021

A mini series. It’s a Sin follows the story of the 1980s, the story of AIDS, and charts the joy and heartbreak of a group of friends across a decade in which everything changed.

Q-tips say: YES, see it. It is a mini series so you don’t have to watch it all at one time. In 1981, and a gang of friends move in together, in the heart of London. As the decade unfolds, we follow their hopes and dreams, highs and lows, all coming out and coming of age. But a terrible new virus is on the rise, and they’ll need each other more than ever as the fight begins.

Mrs. Q says: The show is painfully great at depicting terror and willing blindness in the early ’80s. Ritchie and his friends start to hear rumors but want so badly to ignore them, and the physical symptoms of AIDS-related illness. This is NOT for “small children” since there is nudity and sex unless you want to have a discussion about that with them.

Judas & the Black Messiah 2/26/21

FBI informant William O’Neal infiltrates the Illinois Black Panther Party and is tasked with keeping tabs on their charismatic leader, Chairman Fred Hampton. A career thief, O’Neal revels in the danger of manipulating both his comrades and his handler, Special Agent Roy Mitchell. Hampton’s political prowess grows just as he’s falling in love with fellow revolutionary Deborah Johnson. Meanwhile, a battle wages for O’Neal’s soul. Will he align with the forces of good? Or subdue Hampton and The Panthers by any means, as FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover commands?

Q-tips say: We did NOT enjoy it. Found the movie very slow and hard to understand what they are saying. There was no way to get sub-titles, which might have helped a lot. Today, pick up the news from internet, newspapers, etc. & the same story line is still happening.
