THE CALL OF THE WILD vividly brings to the screen the story of Buck, a big-hearted dog whose blissful domestic life is turned upside down when he is suddenly uprooted from his California home and transplanted to the exotic wilds of the Alaskan Yukon during the Gold Rush of the 1890s. As the newest rookie on a mail delivery dog sled team–and later its leader–Buck experiences the adventure of a lifetime, ultimately finding his true place in the world and becoming his own master.

Q-tips say: Yes, watch it!  Good movie. Some critics did not like that the dog was animated. Well, you can’t tell that is so. See and enjoy.

Jesus Christ Superstar on You Tube – KEEP AN OPEN MIND FOR THIS modern day version of an excellent production.

Q-tips say: Yes, watch!  To keep the public entertained during the lock down, Lloyd Webber has made a selection of his most well-known musicals available to watch free of charge. Although the full schedule hasn’t been released potential options include The Phantom of the Opera, Evita, School of Rock, and even Cats.

Friday April 10: ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’

A different Lloyd Webber musical will stream each week on The Shows Must Go On!, a new YouTube channel devoted to this project. Each show will go live on the channel on Friday at 7pm BST (2pm EDT, 4am AEST), and will remain viewable for 48 hours afterward.

In this 1970 rock opera by Lloyd Webber and Rice, an anti-authoritarian Middle Eastern agitator gets arrested after kissing a guy in a park. Conceived as an album, then moved to the Broadway stage in 1971, the show is a motley union of high and low: classical strains and groovy rock riffs, biblical fidelity and savvy spin, timeless tale and of-its-moment storytelling. Rice’s libretto takes straightforward versions of New Testament figures and transplants them into the potted soil of post-Warhol media celebrity.

This 2012 recording, which debuts on Good Friday, captures the touring arena concert production that grew out of the British TV competition show ‘Superstar’. Ben Forster plays Jesus, with support from Tim Minchin as Judas, Chris Moyles as Herod and Melanie C (née Sporty Spice) as Mary Magdalene

TIGER KING –  A bizarre true crime story you have to see to believe, Tiger King is a messy and captivating portrait of obsession gone terribly wrong.

Q-tips say:  A really strange story. I liked it more than the Mr. Mrs. Q says:

Tiger King is the weird docu-series distraction we can use right now.

Richard Jewell –   based on true events, “Richard Jewell” is a story of what happens when what is reported as fact obscures the truth. “There is a bomb in Centennial Park. You have thirty minutes.” The world is first introduced to Richard Jewell as the security guard who reports finding the device at the 1996 Atlanta bombing-his report making him a hero whose swift actions save countless lives. But within days, the law enforcement wannabe becomes the FBI’s number one suspect, vilified by press and public alike, his life ripped apart. Reaching out to independent, anti-establishment attorney Watson Bryant, Jewell staunchly professes his innocence. But Bryant finds he is out of his depth as he fights the combined powers of the FBI, GBI and APD to clear his client’s name, while keeping Richard from trusting the very people trying to destroy him.

Q-tips say: We liked it.  Mrs. Q says: Have to like the lawyer. A film that does a good job of explaining the facts of an event in recent history to those who don’t know about it. News media seems to have NOT changed much since that indident.

The Current War –  Three brilliant visionaries set off in a charged battle for the future in The Current War, the epic story of the cutthroat competition that literally lit up the modern world. Benedict Cumberbatch is Thomas Edison, the celebrity inventor on the verge of bringing electricity to Manhattan with his radical new DC technology. On the eve of triumph, his plans are upended by charismatic businessman George Westinghouse (Michael Shannon), who believes he and his partner, the upstart genius Nikolai Tesla (Nicholas Hoult), have a superior idea for how to rapidly electrify America: with AC current.  As Edison and Westinghouse grapple for who will power the nation, they spark one of the first and greatest corporate feuds in American history, establishing for Titans of Industry the need to break all the rules.  

Q-tips say:  Historical drama about a technological showdown that produced something we now all take for granted. Was ok – what can I say?: a C-19 movie.

Q-tips say:   A little disappointing.  Many entertainers did not perform but asked for donations which was ok but hope they are the ones with the cash and should have mentioned what they were donating. Perhaps doing this show was one way to donate for them.   Mrs. Q says:  I did like the idea that those who did perform or appear were in their home environment & with no makeup/out laddish/bizarre  costumes, or backup music, dancers, etc.

JUMANI –  The Next Level, the gang is back but the game has changed. As they return to Jumanji to rescue one of their own, they discover that nothing is as they expect. The players will have to brave parts unknown and unexplored, from the arid deserts to the snowy mountains, in order to escape the world’s most dangerous game.

Q-tips say: The Mr. liked it more.  I say: whatever.

Bombshell –   Based on the real scandal, BOMBSHELL is a revealing look inside the most powerful and controversial media empire of all time; Fox News, and the explosive story of the women who brought down the infamous man who created it.

Q-tips say:  I say: it touches on the toxic masculinity and systematic sexism that permeates Fox News, it does little to contextualize the industry that allowed this behavior to thrive.

The other half was not impressed – so similar to the TV special that was on.

Uncut Gems – An electrifying crime thriller about Howard Ratner (Adam Sandler), a charismatic New York City jeweler always on the lookout for the next big score. When he makes a series of high-stakes bets that could lead to the windfall of a lifetime, Howard must perform a precarious high-wire act, balancing business, family, and encroaching adversaries on all sides, in his relentless pursuit of the ultimate win.

Q-tips say: The Mr. liked it and found it interesting that Adam Sandler, was highlighted in a different role than usual – but he was glad he got what he deserved. I say it’s being a tad over-valued.  Also, I never thought a score could be so detrimental to a movie, but after this odd score played over the dialogue for the first 20 minutes of the film I was tempted to stop watching- but did not.

Blow the man down –  Easter Cove, a salty fishing village on the far reaches of Maine’s rocky coast. Grieving the loss of their mother and facing an uncertain future, Mary Beth & Priscilla Connolly cover up a gruesome run-in with a dangerous man. To conceal their crime, the sisters must go deeper into Easter Cove’s underbelly and uncover the town matriarchs’ darkest secrets.

Q tips say: liked it.  Creates a well-realized world with layers that keep revealing themselves. You don’t want to live there, but it’s well worth a visit.  Blow the Man Down makes the most of its wind-blown Maine fishing village location and the strength of its mostly female cast.
