THE MUSIC MAN

THE MUSIC MAN –  170 N Dearborn St., Chicago,  (312) 443-3800,  http://goodmantheatre.org

The Music Man – He’s charming and charismatic—no wonder con man Harold Hill assumes he can easily fleece the citizens of staid River City, Iowa with the grand promise of a marching band. But the smooth-talking swindler can’t tell a trombone from a treble clef—and Marian, the local librarian, knows it. In his attempt to steal her heart (and save his hide), Harold learns a thing or two about moral responsibility—and unexpectedly enriches the town with a love of music.

Q-tips say: Enjoy it! Even tho you might have seen it before –  it never gets old.

QUIET – Power of introverts in a World that can’t stop talking 8/2019

QUIET – the power of introverts in a world that can’t stop talking.  – Susan Cain

Mrs. Q says: YES, I did enjoy this book.

QUIET does an eloquent/powerful job of extolling the virtues of the listeners and thinkers.  Our culture honors overvaluation on extroversion. You know some of them.  The extrovert Ideal has been documented in many studies. Some believe talkative people are rated as smarter, better looking, more interesting.  Velocity of speech counts as well and volume.  Some are just plain brash.

QUIET takes the reader on a journey from Dale Carnegie’s birthplace to Harvard Business School, Tony Robbins seminar to an Evangelical megachurch. It touches on Asian-American students who feel alienated from the brash, backslapping atmosphere of American schools.

There were/are many introverts have been successful: Van Gogh, Chopin,  Martin Luther King, Rosa Parks, Gandhi.

Sword of Trust 8/2019

Sword of Trust –  When Cynthia & Mary (Jillian Bell & Michaela Watkins) show up to collect Cynthia’s inheritance from her deceased grandfather, the only item she’s received is an antique sword that was believed by her grandfather to be proof that the South won the Civil War. The two attempt to unload the object to a curmudgeonly pawnshop owner (Marc Maron) & his man-child sidekick Nathaniel (Jon Bass). When Mel and Nathaniel discover there’s a black market for the relic, the two pairs reluctantly join forces to sell this rarefied ‘prover item’ to the highest bidder. The adventure that ensues takes the four of them on a wild journey into the depths of conspiracy theory and Southern disillusionment.

Q-tips say: Liked it.  I, Mrs. Q, was not sure I would like it but did. More fast moving then I thought it might be and the ending was little predictable but liked it.

MingHin restaurant 2019

MingHin – in Chinatown.  2168 S Archer Ave., Chicago, IL, (312) 808-1999,    http://minghincuisine.comminghincuisine.com

Q-tips say:  Was ok. A bit disappointing with a  fried item – said it was fried but really really fried.  Asked about how spicy – not too, but for the Mrs., it was too spicy but the Mr. ate it. Had: duck tips, stir fried pork rice, two spicy spicy lamb tips, tea and serving of pork pot stickers. Had to bring home some of the pot stickers and rice to enjoy another time.

Service, ambiance cleanliness of the restaurant was ok.

Chinatown – Chgo 7/2019

Chinatown –  Chinatown Square – 2154 S Archer Ave., Chicago, IL,  (312) 842-9831,

Q-tips say: Yes, see it. Been here before. Chicago’s Chinatown isn’t huge, a collection of a few streets.  The architecture, the statues, the Chinese zodiac statues, the two story tiers of businesses. Its old and historic. Chicago Chinatown  This time we took the public transportation “the Red Line elevated train.”  Also have taken the water taxi here.  Many stores, restaurants to visit. Always have to stop for a fresh and hot BBQ Pork Bun from a bakery. This time it was from Chiu Quon Bakery. Cute little shop but very loud with the locals enjoying the food/coffee/TV/and their conversations.

Continued walking around on a beautiful weather day.  Stopped for lunch at MingHin restaurant where we had several “small plates- dim sum.” Continued walking through the square and then home on the “Red” Line.

See our review of MingHin on Q-tips restaurants 2019.

Breakthrough 7/2019

Breakthrough – streaming – BREAKTHROUGH is based on the inspirational true story of one mother’s unfaltering love in the face of impossible odds. When Joyce Smith’s adopted son John falls through an icy Missouri lake, all hope seems lost. But as John lies lifeless, Joyce refuses to give up. Her steadfast belief inspires those around her to continue to pray for John’s recovery, even in the face of every case history and scientific prediction.  BREAKTHROUGH is an enthralling reminder that faith and love can create a mountain of hope, and sometimes even a miracle.

Q-tips say: Yes, we did enjoy this movie.  Mrs. Q says: the movie critics did not like it probably due to the fact that has “religious tones.”  However, who cares what the critics always have to say?  Not I. See it, you might really enjoy Breakthrough. Based on a true story, it was a pleasant surprise.  Never underestimate the power of prayer and the power of a “Mother” and Father.

Museum of Science & Industry – behind the scene exhibits for members 7/2019

Museum of Science & Industry – a behind the scene exhibit for members.

5700 S Lake Shore Dr., Chicago, IL 60637, Hyde Park,  (773) 684-1414,  emsichicago.org

Q-tips say: Yes, an enjoyable visit. Saw things that are stored and they had their own personnel talking about these items and answering questions. A lot of activities for the “kids.”    Drawings, free cup of ice cream for everyone, balloon animals, make your own toy  kits, etc.

Mrs. Q’s favorite item: An old fashion TV that had a round window like a magnifying glass.  She never saw a TV like that and neither did the Mr.  Thanks to the young man who answered all my questions & the stories he told.  Do you think they will ever bring back “Paul Bunyan” or the original “Heart exhibit”?  Hope so.

Halim Time & Glass Museum – Evanston IL

Halim Time & Stained Glass Museum– 1560 Oak Ave., Evanston, IL     http://halimmuseum.org

Q-tips say:  See it and enjoy the beauty. We and our friends did enjoy.  It is two floors and there is an elevator and a handicap entrance.   Downstairs are the restrooms, tables/chairs for eating their snacks/drinks  from the vending machine. They offer guided tours at 1:00.   They are working on the third floor to have rotating exhibits which they intend to have completed by the end of this year.

Mrs. Q says: The heart of this collection is the clocks. When climbing the stairs, look up: the building’s topped with a zodiac-themed stained glass dome.  Left at the top of the stairs is a reproduction of the large mechanical clock.  The oldest clocks here mostly date back to about 1500, though there is a sundial from Egyptian times.  The Japanese clocks (beautiful and apparently with 9 hours instead of 12) were fascinating; the French industrial clocks (shaped like trains; steam engines; automobiles) very interesting; and there’s a giant collection of paste-encrusted Chinese clocks with automata and one plain automaton (a boy pulling a fish out of a net), in addition to a collection of navigational tools (clock-ish; another stained glass dome); “skeleton” clocks with the works exposed; and the sort of fancy porcelain bisque clocks one might expect.  There aren’t a lot of “mystere” clocks (where one is left wondering where on earth the mechanism is hidden.   Pocket watches from various local factories (Elgin!)  and some interesting old advertisements praising the watches’ durability. Yes, they have videos showing how many of the clocks work in action.

A fine collection of Tiffany windows; John LaFarge; Frederick Lamb, and an artist I’d never heard of, Mary Tillinghast, with wonderful deep colors.  There’s one Prairie School window and a few skylights from the old Auditorium theater downtown.  There’s also a giant Tiffany window of a Madonna and child with the painting it’s based on and the original photographs, and another giant Tillinghast.  There is a small display window of arts-and-crafts furniture designed by Tiffany as part of the furnishings for an entire house (including two lamps); some of his watercolors; a few mosaics; a sample panel traveling salesmen used to sell the famous lamps; and even a setting of silver flatware by the other Tiffany.
