4 Places

4 Places –  The Den Theater – 1333 N Milwaukee., Chicago, (773) 697-3830,   thedentheatre.com    – Deceptively simple in its structure and unfolding in real time, this emotionally precise play deploys its spare components to devastating and darkly comic effect. A brother and sister have gotten word from their elderly parents’ caretaker that they may be a danger to each other. The brother joins his sister and mother on their weekly lunch date, hoping that he and his sister can get a clearer picture of the situation. As the mother confronts the indignities of age and the children stare down a mounting list of losses and disappointments, a harrowing and true-to-life image of the family emerges.

Q-tips say: It was ok – but some were laughing and we were like – what are they finding funny?  Perhaps we felt that way because we are getting older.

‘Four Places’ is a fast-paced one act about two siblings dealing with aging parents. The action is fairly simple; a car ride to lunch, the meal and the car ride back.  Warren (Bruch Reed) and Ellen (Amy Montgomery) are the disgruntled siblings. Throughout, there’s an underlying bitterness between the adult children and their mother. Peggy their mother (Meg Thalken) first appears as any other sweet old lady with a slight distance from modern life. The awkwardness seems merely like a generational gap. Once they begin the lunch, the revelations unfold and we get a glimpse into not only this specific family, but the aging process in general.
This is a tight-knit cast and the nature of the play requires it to be so. Montgomery and Reed are convincing siblings. There’s a familiar chemistry between them adds a complicated layer to the story. They love each other, but rarely like each other. Reed is the sensitive one and Montgomery is the tough one. Good cop, bad cop.  Johnson’s play is about how uncomfortable it is to age, especially into the twilight years when control and dignity begin to slip away.
‘Four Places’ is a very bleak dark comedy. It asks what happens when the parental/child roles reverse. Each scene is perfectly structured, the needs of the characters are so clear that the ending sneaks up on you.  You may not cry but you’ll certainly wonder, what are we going to do about mom?

Yes, what to do with Mom?  It should be “what to do about Dad? Dad is asking Mom to kill him and put him out of his pain. Mrs. Q says: What type of care giver did they have that she could not suggest getting hospice involved instead of complaining about Mom.  Mrs. Q’s favorite character was Warren. He was sensitive and the women seemed to not give him time to speak out.  They coined this play as a bleak dark comedy? It should not considered a comedy, in my opinion.

Shedd Aquarium 6/2019

Shedd Aquarium –  1200 S Lake Shore Dr., Chicago,  (312) 939-2438,

http://sheddaquarium.org

Q-tips say: Yes, we enjoyed the visit. It was  a FREE day for residents. Yes you need to show some ID – or purchase tickets on line for $6.00. But being seniors, the cost was $3.00 for both.  So there are some benefits to getting older- not many but some.

It was busy with summer camps and visitors but we still were able to enjoy each exhibit. Favorite was: The Dolphins. Afterward we walk from the Aquarium to Berghoff’s Rest. A long walk but the weather was beautiful and the walk is along Lake Michigan.

Naples Italy

Ruins of Pompeii –   The Vesuvius victims in question were former residents of Herculaneum, a town even closer to the maw of the volcano than the famous site of Pompeii. When Vesuvius blew its top, it lobbed pumice.

Frozen In Time: The Victims Of The Catastrophic Mount. The volcano had been dormant for centuries, but that changed when Mount Vesuvius quite literally blew its top and submerged the city of Pompeii and the neighboring cities of Herculaneum, Oplonti, and Stabiae in hot ash and pumice, killing thousands of people.

Mount Vesuvius is a somma-stratovolcano located on the Gulf of Naples in Campania, Italy, about 9 km east of Naples and a short distance from the shore. It is one of several volcanoes which form the Campanian volcanic arc.

Miracle (CUBS) – musical 108 years in the making 6/2019

Miracle   Image result for chicago cubs symbol A musical 108 yrs in the making.

 – Royal George Theater – 1641 North Halsted Ave.,  (312) 988-9000,  theroyalgeorgetheatre.com

Miracle is set against the backdrop of the Chicago Cubs 2016 Championship season.

MIRACLE tells the story of a typical blue collar Chicago family and what it means to have faith and lose it and try to regain it again. The story chronicles the Delaney family, a tough North Side clan whose lives have been intrinsically linked to the Cubbies for generations. Each member of the family has their own story built around the dynamics of their lives and their love of the Cubs. Whether it’s Pops Delaney, who struggles to resolve his conflicts with his son, Charlie, or Charlie’s struggle to keep the family business afloat while trying to be a good husband and attentive Dad, or his 11-year-old daughter Dani, who is totally enamored with the boys in blue and every one of their statistics. Mom, as is frequently the case, is the glue that holds the whole family together.

Q-tips say: HOLY COW! See it! A fun play with great stage settings with a superb cast.  Mrs. Q says: this is a great musical – there is dialog and singing thru out not just totally singing. Great story line and a touch of genius to have a movie screen above the stage where they change the background on the screen during scenes but does not detract from the story – it adds to the story. WOW!  Make sure you wear your Cubs shirt/hat, etc. Fun!

If you are a “Cubs” fan, even if you are not an avid fan, see this musical. They include the audience for the 7th inning stretch.  A smaller theater but plenty of room for you to stretch your feet.    Can’t say enough about this musical.  Go Cubs!!!!

Well, of course except for the dinner afterwards at Ca BaBa Reeba – Delicious small plates.

Falsettos – 6/2019

Falsettos –  Nederlander Theatre – 24 W Randolph St,  (312) 977- 1701,  broadwayinchicago.com

Falsettos revolves around the life of a charming, intelligent, neurotic gay man named Marvin, his wife, lover, about-to-be-Bar-Mitzvahed son, their psychiatrist, and the lesbians next door. It’s a hilarious and achingly poignant look at the infinite possibilities that make up a modern family… and a beautiful reminder that love can tell a million stories.

Q-tips say: Enjoyed it. Yes it is about life. Families, husband/wife not getting along/divorce/remarriage/gays/ and raising a child/death. Mrs. Q says: Be aware that the entire show is sung, so if that is not enticing to you, think twice before you go.  Strong acting, powerful singing voices and interesting how they manage the sets on stage. The theater is gorgeous. An old theater that was once called the “Oriental Theater.” It is a treat to just see the beautiful theater.

Ask Dr. Ruth 6/2019

Ask Dr. Ruth –  Ask Dr. Ruth chronicles the incredible life of Dr. Ruth Westheimer, a Holocaust survivor who became America’s most famous sex therapist. With her diminutive frame, thick German accent, and uninhibited approach to sex therapy and education, Dr. Ruth transformed the conversation around sexuality. As she approaches her 90th birthday and shows no signs of slowing down, Dr. Ruth revisits her painful past and unlikely path to a career at the forefront of the sexual revolution.

Q-tips say: YES, see it.  Well done movie about Ruth that covers her childhood (via animation) and her personal & professional life – almost 90 years old – WOW!  Mrs. Q was surprised to learn that Dr. Ruth was married several times.  PS. She has a very strong, thick  German accent so sometimes difficult to understand her but there are instances where there are subtitles.
