A rebellious teenager, future Beatle John Lennon (Aaron Johnson) lives with his Aunt Mimi (Kristin Scott Thomas) in working-class Liverpool, England. Mimi’s husband suddenly dies, and John spies his mother, Julia (Anne-Marie Duff), at the funeral. Despite Mimi’s misgivings, John intends to have a real relationship with his mother. Julia introduces him to popular music and the banjo and, though a family conflict looms, young Lennon is inspired to form his own band.
Q-tips say: Yes, we did enjoy this movie.
Very well done movie. Even though it was filled with music, I loved how it didn’t really get into The Beatles (and I’m a huge Beatles fan), but really stuck to John’s painful story. It was beautifully acted and directed. Very moving. Cinematography was was wonderful. Just a good movie all around. A true story of human frailty and love.
At the height of the Detroit Garage Rock movement in 1999, a chronically ill father, his musician son and his band bond on a raucous road trip. Together, they war with a rival band on the way to the South by Southwest festival.
Q-tips say:We were disappointed in this movie. Expected more music but that did not happen. Perhaps the Band should stop the run.

7/29/25 – An expansive portrait of the life and music of Billy Joel, exploring the love, loss, and personal struggles that fuel his songwriting; intimately exploring the life and work of Joel, whose music has endured across generations. on HBO Max
Q-tips say:YES, WATCH IT!
BRILLIANT. It is one of the greatest musical documentaries we have seen. Excellent production with cameos from Paul M from the Beatles, Bruce Springsteen, Sting, etc. What truly elevates this documentary is how it thoughtfully weaves in the origin stories of some of Joel’s most legendary hits Piano Man, New York State of Mind, Just the Way You Are, Vienna, and Goodnight Saigon. These behind-the-scenes moments add an irresistible layer for fans, showing how his childhood struggles, romantic turmoil, and New York roots shaped songs that would become timeless anthems. It’s in these intimate glimpses of his songwriting process that the film finds its emotional core.
