HOB NOB REST., Brevard NC 10/12/2014

HOB NOB Sun 10/12/2014 226 W Main St., Brevard, NC 28712 (828) 966-4662, hobnobrestaurant.com

Q-Tips say: EXCELLENT FOOD, DRINKS(full bar and Wine and Beer), SERVICE and Ambiance. Our Waitress/and a Male Waiter had no name tags but Mrs. Q thought, the name might be on the bill but it was not – therefore, I specified the date on this review – to praise them in their service.

Ordered our drinks but Mrs. Q was told they ran out of cherries. The male waiter ran next door and got cherries for her drink. That was way beyond the call of duty. Mrs. Q laughed and expressed her gratitude.

Both Q’s ordered the Mushroom Soup and the “Special Fish of the Day”. Trout sauteed with a light Lobster Cream Sauce with grits or rice and sauteed spinach. Unlike other restaurants, there was real crab meat in the sauce. The soup and entree were outstanding. They also serve complimentary warm bread with an olive oil dipping sauce.

The service is great and kudos to the waitress and waiter who waited on the Q’s on that Sunday evening.

MAYBERRY Soups Sandwiches, Brevard, NC 10/2014

MAYBERRY’S SOUP & SANDWICHES – 30 W Main St., Brevard, NC 28712 (828) 862-8646

Q’s decided to stop for some soup since it was a rainy day. They don’t take reservations Mr. Q had the vegetarian Chile and Mrs Q ordered Chicken Rice Soup. Did the the table dance, because people would come and sit at your table even tho you place something on it. When our soup finally came, Mrs. Q was then told they ran out of the soup she ordered- could they not have said that when it was ordered? I was asked, would you like something else? The waitress got another menu and threw it on the table and walked away. The reason Mrs. Q did not order the Tomato Soup was because it was spicy. The waitress returned and Mrs. Q ordered the Tomato Soup – she took it because she was hungry. When the soup did arrive, No Spoon, or napkins. She had to get up and ask for these items. Mr. Q liked his Chile and Mrs. Q eventually got what she did not want, Tomato Soup that was spicy.

Stuff happens, but that is why I give this restaurant thumbs down for poor service. Yes, I understand this is a small college town but the service should be a tad better.

GRACELAND CEMETERY TOUR 9/2014

GRACELAND CEMETERY FREE Walking TOUR – Graceland Cemetery is one of Chicago’s best-known and most historic cemeteries. It was established in 1860, originally outside city limits, but engulfed as the city grew northward. The original City Cemetery was on the lake front, and was considered a health hazard due to overcrowding and water-borne diseases. The bodies were moved to nearby Graceland in the town of Lake View, with the old city cemetery becoming what is now Lincoln Park.

Graceland is on the north side of Chicago, with its main entrance at the corner of Clark and Irving Park roads, extending north and east from that point. Graceland’s office is just inside the main gate at the southwest corner. Within, free maps and pamphlets are available, as well as a $10.00 book published by the Chicago Architecture Foundation, A Walk Through Graceland Cemetery.

HARRY CARY- 7th Inning Stretch Rest. in Water Tower Place 9/2014

HARRY CARY’S 7th Inning Stretch Rest. in Water Tower Place – Water tower – 835 N Michigan Ave., 7th Fl., Chicago, IL 60607

Q-Tips say: Good food, nice drink/food menus, service and ambiance. If you are looking for a steakhouse this is not your place. The Q’s had a cup of soup, and shared a sandwich, the Short Rib -Italian beef sandwich which came w/ a small side of Fries or salad, along with a soft drink made for a great late lunch. A tad too early for the Q to have an alcoholic drink but they do have a full bar and if you order a 20 oz. of Harry’s favorite beer it comes with a complimentary souvenir beer glass. Holy Cow! Yes, there really is a replica of a cow with holes in it. It is full of sport memorabilia, TV screens, it is a sport bar after all, and music. There were quite a few mall people and elders in for a late lunch. Then we walked to the Sports Store to look around and get our FREE tickets to the Sport Museum. Nice deal and a great place to visit for any hungry Chicago Sport fan.

WATER TOWER PUMPING STATION TOUR – Chicago 9/2014

WATER TOWER PUMPING STATION TOUR – Chicago Avenue and Michigan Avenue., Chicago, IL 60686
cityofchicago.org

Q-Tips say:Stop at the visitor’s Center located inside and then see the Pumping Station – there is also a “Hot-Tix” Booth inside. It was built in 1869 two years before the Chicago Fire. This survived along with the Water Tower itself which are landmarks in our city. Yes, it is a working Pump Station. Also, presently showing, at the Historic Water Tower is an exhibit showing the photos of Jason Reblando’s three US greenbelt towns, Greenbelt, Maryland : Greenhills, Ohio; and Greendale, Wisc. that were developed in the 1930’s which was part of Pres. Franklin Roosevelt’s New Deal. Not a very large exhibit but wonderful to see on your day at the Water Tower Touring in Chicago.

Mrs. Q says: Go and see a part of Chicago History that survied the Great Chicago Fire.

ALZHEIMER DISEASE – other Dementias 8/2014

ALZHEIMER’S DISEASE & other Dementias by Natalie Rubinstein – A practical guide to caring for someone with Dementias.

Mrs. Q says: An outstanding book about caregiving, understanding Dementia, getting an Accurate Diagnosis, Medications, communicating with a person who has Dementia, dealing w/unwanted behaviors, safety (yours and others), the argumentative stage and the combative stage, etc. A must read for those who are living with someone with Dementia or Alzheimer.

Goes through each step: what type of Dr. to see, what to take and what type of tests might be given. How to get a patient to the appointment (many times the patient will refuse to see someone because they don’t feel they have a problem), how to handle a belligerent patient. What the care giver is in for during the long haul. How long the Dr. exam might take – many times it can take all day and you might not get a complete evaluation on the first visit. Medications, etc. Most important of all – there are many types of Dementias and neither Dementias nor Alzheimer’s disease ever gets better or goes away. As of this moment, there is no known cure for either.

Peggy from Gino’s North 90th BD Party 8/2019

HAPPY BIRTHDAY to Peggy. EDGEWATER — The neighborhood’s favorite pizza chef hits a big milestone Friday.

Q-Tips say: What a great lady and wonderful cook. Gino’s North is lucky to have her.
Mrs. Q says: Peggy is my role model. A fun time was had at her private BD party for relatives and friends at La Villa in Chicago. It was like a wedding. Great sit down meal, drinks, music and a magician who went from table to table. Peggy did not sit down for a moment, she danced every dance. She is 85 and going strong! Good for you!

From a news article: Peggy, who’s been slinging pies at Gino’s North on Granville Avenue for decades, turns 90.

“I may be the owner, but she’s the real boss,” said Steve Kilian, who took over the bar and restaurant eight years ago. “It’s more than just a job for her. This is her life, you know.”

In fact,  said she’s witnessed “three or four” owners come and go through the doors at 1111 W. Granville Ave.

“I make the dough, I make the sauce, I make every pizza. … I’m always right there,” she said, looking back toward the small kitchen. “Isn’t it tiny? You get a big guy back here and you’re in trouble.”

Her career at Gino’s (no relation to Gino’s East) began after her husband died in 1992.

The bar and pizzeria was looking for a cook, so she applied.

“I felt I needed something,” she said. “I just didn’t want to stay home.”

It wasn’t the first time she worked a restaurant. Until 1981, she and her husband and their two sons ran a barbecue place, called Big Pit, at Clark and Howard streets in Rogers Park.

Originally, she wanted to work just part time. But as business fluctuated, and owners came and went, “it never turned out that way,” she said.

Now she works five days a week, from 4-11 p.m., sometimes later. Although she loves the pizza, she admits she doesn’t eat it much anymore.

She said customers from years ago, who might have moved away from Edgewater, come back to Gino’s just to see the star cook, saying, “Oh my God, Peggy, you’re still here?”

To which she responds, she said, “I’m still here!” And the life-long Chicagoan doesn’t want it any other way.

“Right now my health is good, and I feel great,” she said. “I’ve had a wonderful life.”
Peggy, Happy Birthday! and many more. You go girl!  She has retired but still very active.

LAO YOU JU 7/2017 Chinatown – Chicago

LA YOU JU 2002 S Wentworth Ave, Chicago, IL 60616, in Chinatown, Red Line to Cermak (312) 225-7818

Q-Tips say: The Q’s went to Lao You Ju after a Chinatown Tour. We had Dim Sum (3 to 4 pieces on a small plate). Everything was fresh, tasty and served warm. Service was good. We shared the very tasty BBQ Pork bun (3pc), Black Pepper Short Ribs (for those who might think it was very spicy, it was not), Green Chive Dumpling (3pc), each had a bowl of Won Ton Soup. One of Mrs.Q surprise picks – Cheese Roll w/ Shrimp (4pc). She was apprehensive about the Cheese roll w/Shrimp – but not to worry, a light batter, very little cheese and large pieces of shrimp in the crispy light batter was outstanding.

Mrs. Q says: There are many Chinese restaurants in Chicago and Chinatown but several have the name “Lao” – they are owned by the same person. She was glad they had pictures of the food along with the written description because it helps to get an idea of what you will be eating. Our waitress was super helpful and attentive. The entire meal delicious and reasonably priced at around $15.00 pp with tea. They also offer Chow Fun & Chow Mein lunch specials for $5.95 from 11 AM-4 PM. Go and enjoy. We and our friends did enjoy.
