Cienfuegos – Our day began with a tour to the city known as, “The Pearl of the South,” founded in 1819.  This is the heart of the country’ sugar can, mango, tobacco and coffee production.   Stopped at the Graphic Society of Cienfuegos and met local artists and viewed their prints – the society is known for its programs for children with special needs. Our tour continued at Project Trazo Libres: artist Santiago Hermes Martinez converted his family home into an art collective in 2009 to support local artists and collaborate with them.  We viewed unique handicrafts, murals, photographs and traditional costumes.

Then enjoyed a panoramic view of Cienfuegos and Teatro Thomas Terry.  Built between 1887 and 1889  to honor Venezuelan industrialist Tomas Terry.  The 950 seat opera house and theater is decorated with Carrara marble and hand carved Cuban hardwoods.

NOTE: They will charge you to take photos inside this opera house so be sure that you really want that photo.

Afternoon: A documentary about Cuba.

Evening: Make your own cocktail.  Mrs. Q says, ”No thank you, I prefer they make my cocktail.”

After dinner: another performance by the Cuban dancers and you can join them and dance along. We did dance along.

H – FUN?? Day at Sea – Day 6

Day at Sea – We were supposed to go to Maria de la Gorda, but for some reason that stop was cancelled and no one seems to know why.

Morning talk & demonstration:  Cuban Culture, a cooking demonstration on Cuban Festive Dishes.

Evening: Captain’s Cocktail Party – we were asked to dress elegantly but some guests came in shorts and sandals.  Perhaps for them that was elegant dress.

Evening performance: Welcome to Cabaret! The musical “Cabaret” performed by Cuban dancers/performers.

G – HAVANA – Day 5

HAVANA – The city was founded in 1519 by the Spanish and by the 17th century it became one of the Caribbean’s main centers for ship-building.

Our morning tour began with a visit to the Fine Art Museum “Museo de la Revolution.” Housed the former Presidential Palace, and is devoted to the revolutionary war of the 1950’s and the country’s post 1959 history. Then a stop at the outdoor installations of legendary Cuban ceramicist and graphic artist Jose Fuster, a pioneer of Cuban visual art.

After lunch, there was a discussion of the visual art scene in Cuba, the Museums. Dinner then a performance by the Cuban performers and a “nighcap” to talk about our day.

Outdoor installations of Cuban ceramicist and graphic artist Jose Fuster. He lives here in a very tiny home and opened his house to visitors. Pictures are allowed but not of his private residence. Mrs. Q says, his residence is very tiny. He gives any donations to other artist so they may pursue their passion. He has a tribute to Gaudi. Gaudi’s Ma Familia is in Barcelona and he was inspired by Gaudi after a visit with him in Barcelona.

C – Montego Bay Jamaica – Day 1

Montego Bay, Jamaica – – Stayed at “El Greco” resort – it is a dump. Not that we expected it to be classy and upscale since we were there for sleeping overnight for one night. There are no elevators, so keep this in mind when they tell you where your room is.  They tend to want to put people on the third floor. If you have health issues or need to use a walker, cane, etc. demand a first or second floor coser to the office. The other side has no view and is noisy from street traffic.

Wonder why we could not fly out a day later and just board the ship? Perhaps it was our fault for not asking.  Oh well, that is what can happen when you follow along like lemmings.

The transfer ride from the hotel to board the ship did arrive on time.  The ride to the ship was a real eye-opener.  Vendors all over running in and out on the street trying to sell things to the drivers. Soft drinks, washing your front car windows, etc.  All trying to make some money.

B – Government – their people get and can/cannot do

What the Cubans can/cannot do and what the Cuban government gives them.

When the tour guides speak about living in Cuba, you hear how great Cuba is regarding health care/dental, etc.  However, it probably is against the government rules to say anything bad about Cuba.

Yes, they get FREE Health Care/Dental from cradle to grave. FREE education from little on all the way up to a Doctorate. There are NO private schools & they do wear uniforms. At an early age, I was told 16 or 17,  both men & women go into the Cuban Military.  Return home only on the weekends. Many Medical Drs. go to different countries after receiving their Cuban Medical Degree to expand their professional knowledge and then return to Cuba after, if  Mrs. Q remembers correctly, either 3 or 4 years then the government will give them a house. They can get FREE birth control at any age & get FREE abortions from the government.

The average Cuban’s monthly salary is approx. $20.00 a month.

RENT APARTMENT PRICE Range
Apartment (1 bedroom) in City Centre 600.00 $
Apartment (1 bedroom) Outside of Centre 115.00 $
Apartment (3 bedrooms) in City Centre 508.33 $
Apartment (3 bedrooms) Outside of Centre 290.00 $
BUY APARTMENT (HOME) PRICE
Price per Square Meter to Buy Apartment in City Centre 328.50 $
Price per Square Meter to Buy Apartment Outside of Centre 383.33 $

What the government gives them on a monthly basis:

12 eggs, A cup of cooking oil, A half pound of chicken, 5 pounds of white rice
10 ounces of grain (red beans), 1 pound of brown sugar, 3 pounds of white sugar
A package of coffee.  That’s everything for a month.  It speaks for itself. Many get additional money to buy things from relatives living in the US.

Cubans can not: Travel abroad without government permission. Change jobs without government permission.  Change residence without government permission.

Access the Internet without government permission (the Internet is closely monitored and controlled by the government. Only 1.67% of the population has access to the Internet).  Send their children to a private or religious school (all schools are government run, there are no religious schools in Cuba).

Watch independent or private radio or TV stations (all TV and radio stations are owned and run by the government). Cubans illegally watch/listen to foreign broadcasts.   Read books, magazines or newspapers, unless approved/published by the government (all books, magazines and newspapers are published by the government).  Receive publications from abroad or from visitors (punishable by jail terms under Law 88).

Visit or stay in tourist hotels, restaurants, and resorts (these are off-limits to Cubans). Seek employment with foreign companies on the island, unless approved by the government.

Run for public office unless approved by Cuba’s Communist Party.

Own businesses, unless they are very small and approved by the government and pay onerous taxes.  Join an independent labor union (there is only one, government controlled labor union and no individual or collective bargaining is allowed; neither are strikes or protests).

Retain a lawyer, unless approved by the government.  Choose a physician or hospital. Both are assigned by the government.

Refuse to participate in mass rallies and demonstrations organized by the Cuban Communist Party.  Criticize the Castro regime or the Cuban Communist Party, the only party allowed in Cuba.

Jackie

JACKIE – Intimate portrait of one of the most important and tragic moments in American history, seen through the eyes of the iconic First Lady, then Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy (Natalie Portman). JACKIE places us in her world during the days immediately following her husband’s assassination. Known for her extraordinary dignity and poise, here we see a psychological portrait of the First Lady as she struggles to maintain her husband’s legacy and the world of “Camelot” that they created and loved so well.

Q-Tips say: It was ok. Very slow  movie but a detailed look at the entire tragic moments seen thru  Jackie’s perspective. Decent acting by Natalie Portman as Jackie but again slow moving.

Hidden Figures

HIDDEN FIGURES – The incredible untold story of Katherine G. Johnson (Taraji P. Henson), Dorothy Vaughan (Octavia Spencer) and Mary Jackson (Janelle Monáe)-brilliant African-American women working at NASA, who served as the brains behind one of the greatest operations in history: the launch of astronaut John Glenn into orbit, a stunning achievement that restored the nation’s confidence, turned around the Space Race, and galvanized the world. The visionary trio crossed all gender and race lines to inspire generations to dream big.   Q-tips say: Loved it!

Mrs. Q says: Are you looking for a good movie based on facts about women of color dominating an intellectual field? A heartwarming, crowd-pleasing movie, Hidden Figures celebrates an overlooked — and crucial — contributions from a pivotal moment in American history.   Then STOP reading this and go rent/see it now. NO sex, nudity, violence, guns, racial innuendos, preaching or teaching us a lesson, just a great movie that even some teens might enjoy if you can get them to put down there cell phones. In fact, young women and men of all colors should see this and learn/see the way it was back then. Could be a talking moment between your teens (male & female) and you.
